2010 Hokie Cow Classic Scholarship Winner

Dairy Farmers of America is one of the most diversified manufacturers of dairy products, food components and ingredients in theUnited States. DFA is a cooperative, owned and operated by the dairy farmers they serve. They have over 4,000 employees, and their cooperative members make up about a third of the nation’s dairy producers. We are very pleased to have Dairy Farmers of America as a Platinum sponsor for the annual Hokie Cow Classic, and as the sponsor of a named scholarship.

The 2010 recipient of the DFA scholarship is DANA GOCHENOUR is a rising senior, the daughter of Gerald and Debbie Gochenour of Woodstock VA. She grew up on her family’s dairy and hog farm and was an active member of 4-H and FFA for many years. She is a member of the VT Dairy Club and was on the 2009 Dairy Judging B Team that won their biggest contest, the North American International contest in Louisville. Dana was high individual in Holsteins that day, and placed 3rd in reasons and 2nd overall. She is also active in the VT Block & Bridle Club, serving as chair of the 4-H/FFA Meat Evaluation Contest for two years. After graduation I hope to return to the Shenandoah Valley and work in Ag Finance while continuing to help on the farm.

 


2010 Hokie Cow Classic Scholarship Winner

Derek Heizer

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association, Inc. is a regional milk marketing and processing cooperative serving nearly1,500 dairy farm families from Pennsylvania to Alabama. For more than 80 years, Maryland & Virginia has had a long-standing tradition of integrity, service and supplying high quality products to the marketplace. The 2010 winner of the MD-VA scholarship is DEREK HEIZER is a rising senior in Dairy Science and is the son of Lee and Dale Heizer of Middlebrook, VA. While at Virginia Tech he has been very active in the Dairy Club, serving as the Showcase Sale and National ADSA chairs. He was also a member of Virginia Tech’s national champion Dairy Judging team and is active in the Virginia Tech Young Farmers. He is also active in 4-H and the Virginia Junior Holstein Association where he has served as Reporter, Treasurer and on the Board of Directors. Derek plans to attend vet school to become a large animal veterinarian with an emphasis in dairy cattle.

The 2010 winner of the Alltech scholarship is BRITTANY THOMPSON is a rising senior from Snow Camp, NC, the daughter of Tim and Karen Thompson. While not originally from a dairy farm, Brittany got her start in the dairy industry by showing for local farms.Brittany has a passion for cows and for the dairy industry and was active in 4-H, breed associations, and FFA. She is a very active member of our dairy club and a key member of the staff of the Dairy Club’s “Showcase Sale” each year. Brittany competed on our dairy cattle judging team as just a sophomore, placed 4th overall and was high individual in reasons at Harrisburg, and placed 4th overall and 2nd in reasons at Madison. She made the students around her better, leading our team to the national championship. Brittany will begin an internship with Elanco Animal Health in a few weeks, and plans a career in sales and technical support.
